Summary: "No." Tegoshi says firmly, like he's reprimanding a dog, and Massu can see him where he stands, arms crossed and eyes narrowed, but he can't see their daughter and what caused Tegoshi's attention.
"No, this isn't right." Massu says, pointing out a grammar mistake to the twelve-year-old next to him in the couch while chewing chocolate. "I think you should look at the ending there."
The boy makes a deflated noise but takes his homework back to look it over, frowning cutely as he thinks hard about what is wrong with his sentence. Massu smiles, and he doesn't think he'll ever get over that sudden pang of pride and love in his chest when he watches his children.
"Oh, seriously, homework still? You know it's Friday, right?" Tegoshi rolls his eyes as he sets two steaming cups of tea on the table before the couch, then drops down next to Massu with an arm over his shoulders, and Massu thinks he'll never get over the feeling of having him close either.
"You're not a very good influence, love." Massu grins, but leans in to brush his lips against Tegoshi's cheek. "But this is the last check before we're done."
"You sound like you're doing homework too." Tegoshi frowns, then leans past Massu to look at the boy. "He's not doing your homework, is he Haru?"
Haru shakes his head sadly. "I wish he would, I hate grammar."
"That's why you should study it harder, so it'll become your strong point instead of weak point." Tegoshi says, a small smile on his lips that suddenly vanishes as he sees something past them. "Heyheyhey!"
He rises and heads for the hall with determined steps, and Massu knows what's going on without having to look. Instead, he exchanges a dejected look with Haru, who just shrugs like it can't be helped.
Which it probably can't.
"No." Tegoshi says firmly, like he's reprimanding a dog, and Massu can see him where he stands, arms crossed and eyes narrowed, but he can't see their daughter and what caused Tegoshi's attention. "You are not going out like that, you're fifteen years old."
"But dad, it's a costume party!" She whines, and Massu leans back in the couch, waiting for when he'll be called in for an opinion.
"She's Minnie Mouse." Haru says in a low voice, laying his homework on the table and settles in to listen to the argument. "I saw her try it on yesterday, and she said something about not letting dad see her in it."
"Is it that bad?" Massu asks with a sigh as Tegoshi argues that at a costume party you're expected to wear something besides animal ears.
Haru shrugs, but grins a little at his sister getting a yelling since he seems to think that's fair.
"Dad it's not that short, want to measure it?!" Yui argues back at something Tegoshi said, her temper just as bad as Tegoshi's and it never ends well.
"Maybe I do." Tegoshi tells her. "Where the hell did you even buy that?"
"That doesn't matter, it's not. That. Short." She retorts, fire in her voice. "Besides, you've worn much less in your concerts, so don't pick on me!"
"Yeah when I was twenty plus, come back in five years and we can discuss your outfit choices." Tegoshi says venomously, and Massu knows it's a bad choice of Yui to use that argument. "But for now, you're fifteen and I will not let you out the door like that!"
"Yeah, try and stop me!" She yells back, but there's no attempt to escape by the sounds of it, and Massu knows she wouldn't really dare. "I just want to look pretty and I've spent hours putting this together and I'm wearing it!"
"You're always pretty, no need to smack on that much make-up and those Roppongi-at-midnight clothes!" Tegoshi yells back, and Massu starts thinking about intervening.
"You never let me feel pretty, everyone else is always so hot and I'm never allowed to wear what they wear!" Yui keeps arguing, which Tegoshi of course doesn't buy.
"No, because they look like-" At least he cuts himself off with a sigh before he says things you don't say to your daughter, and Massu knows it's his turn, starting to rise from the couch before Tegoshi's even turned and headed back to the living room in frustration. "Massu!"
Massu gently touches Tegoshi's shoulder when he brushes past to sit down in the couch and glare at whatever is straight ahead of him, and then heads for the hall where he finds their daughter in the exact same way, crossed arms and glaring at nothing.
She really does wear little, a crop top with a mid-thigh length puffy skirt and stay-ups, paired with high heels, mouse ears and a lot of make-up. Still, Massu almost wants to smile at how alike she is Tegoshi, both in behaviour and looks, but especially when she's angry, and he knows how to handle that temper from years of practice.
"I won't change." She says determinedly as he steps closer to her, but she's not nearly as angry as she was a minute ago.
Massu looks at her pointedly, and she tries hard to keep her scowl.
"Honestly..." Massu says, but his voice is soft and calm as he frowns at the crop top and stay-ups. "I don't think you should go out like this either."
Yui opens her mouth to protest, but Massu stops her with a glance and continues.
"I'm not saying you can't wear your costume, but all this sex appeal isn't necessary, is it? Otherwise, I think you're really cute." He smiles and steps forward to correct a strand of her long chocolate hair.
"Dad..." She protests, a little embarrassed but not very angry anymore.
"Think about that you're riding the train too. Can't you put on a little more? A full length shirt and maybe a pair of actual stockings?" Massu asks, knowing very well how to negotiate about things like these. "Maybe that new black T-shirt you bought could work?"
She considers that for a moment, then rolls her eyes and agrees that fine, she can do that. If she can keep the heels and the skirt.
Massu lets her go change, her heels clicking through the apartment all the way to her room, and Massu returns to the couch, where Tegoshi sits sulking while Haru eats chocolate and watches the variety show that's on, unbothered by Tegoshi's mood. He's used to it, too.
"Why doesn't she ever listen to me?" Tegoshi asks grumpily as Massu takes his place between him and their son again.
"Because you wouldn't listen to you either, but you'd listen to me." Massu explains, like he's done several times already, and Tegoshi just grumbles something. It's not even funny how much of Tegoshi's temper got into their little girl. Massu grins. "Are you ever going to accept that you're about to turn 45 and should start handling your own fights?"
"I look 35 and you know it." Tegoshi answers fiercely, ignoring the rest of the question, and Massu easily agrees that yes, of course he does.
After a few minutes of cuddling and Tegoshi calming down, Yui steps into the doorway wearing a shirt that covers her stomach and stockings that go all the way up her thighs. "Approved?" She asks a little ironically, and Tegoshi gives her a small nod while Massu smiles.
"Good, then I'm leaving." She says, and turns around to head for the hall.
"Yui!" Tegoshi calls, and she turns, seeming ready for another reprimanding, but Tegoshi's voice softens. "Have a good party. Take care."
She actually smiles back, and it's not Tegoshi's smile she inherited.
"Call when you're heading home."
"Sure." She agrees, and then heads off.
"Girls." Haru shakes his head wisely when the door closes behind her. "I'll never become an unruly teenager like that."
Massu and Tegoshi exchange a look, but then agree with little smiles, both knowing that Haru will probably find his own way to be unruly. And they look forward to it.
